Blog Title “Summer Hair Survival Guide: Styles, Scalp Detox and what Your Braids Didn’t Tell You”

By Rashida Webb | Rx Salon

Summer is here, and so is the heat, humidity, sweat, and sunscreen stuck in your braids and edges. Whether you’re rocking braids, keeping it natural, or reaching for a protective style, your hair needs a seasonal shift.

Let’s talk about what actually works when the temperature rises- and how to keep your scalp and strands healthy underneath it all.

1.       Protective Styles with a purpose

Braids, twists, faux locs, sew-ins, ½ up ½ down, protective styles are summer staples for a reason. Low maintenance? Check. Pool-party approved? Absolutely. But here’s what they don’t tell you: if you’re scalp can’t breathe and your strands aren’t prepped beforehand, you’re setting yourself up for dryness, breakage or worse.

ProTip: Always start with a clean, well-conditioned scalp and healthy hair before installing any protective style. At Rx Salon, I prep clients all year long with detox treatments, hydration treatment, protein treatments and personalized scalp care routines, so their hair is ready for summer fun and feeling luxurious and shiny when it’s time for silk press season.

2.       The Truth About Braid Sprays & “Growth Oils

Let’s be honest- some of these over-the counter braid sprays, and ‘miracle” oils are full of drying alcohols, synthetic fragrances, and pore-clogging ingredients. Just because it tingles doesn’t mean it’s working.

What to Avoid:

·       Mineral oil & petroleum-based products

·       Isopropyl alcohol (hello dry scalp)

·       Synthetic “tea tree” and “peppermint” that offer zero benefits

Pro Tip: Consult with your stylist to customize the right care for your strands during summer. Stick to light oils like jojoba or grapeseed. At Rx Salon, I create a customized scalp treatment that nourishes and cleans

3.       Scalp Detox After Braids: Don’t Skip It

You took your braids down. You let it breathe. But your scalp is still itchy, flaky, or tender. That’s your cue- it’s detox time.

Why Detox?

Your hair was wrapped in plastic, in the sun, you applied sunscreen, product, sweat, sebum and ledge control. This combination can clog your follicles. Detoxing gently resets your scalp, balances pH, and allows your natural hair to thrive.

Pro Tip: I recommend a professional detox treatment at a Salon, to make sure all the residue is removed, and your strands receive a Salon quality bond rebuilding treatment after.

4.       Natural Hair= Summer- Ready, Too

You don’t have to install anything to protect your hair. With the right regimen, your natural curls and coils can flourish in summer.

Top Natural Summer Styles

·       Defined wash-n-goes with humidity resistant stylers

·       Twist-outs with hydrating creams and gels

·       Pineapple buns for hot days and lazy nights

·       Headwrap pr scarves (chic and scalp-friendly)

Pro Tip: Use humectants wisely. Glycerin can attract too much moisture in humid weather and lead to frizz. I help clients choose stylers based on their climate and curl pattern.

5.       Extensions Can Slay Safely

From weaves to clip-ins to tape-ins, extensions are an easy way to add volume and versatility. But if installed or maintained poorly, they can do real damage-especially during summer.

Protect Your Hair Underneath:

·       Keep your scalp clean and dry

·       Avoid excessive tension at the hairline

·       Don’t leave them in longer than recommended (yes 10 weeks is too long)

Pro Tip: Book maintenance appointments. I check my client’s natural hair’s condition and adjust styling as needed.

Your Summer Hair Needs Strategy

Summer fun shouldn’t come at the cost of your hair’s health. Whether you’re braided up, natural, or somewhere in between, you need a plan that protects your scalp, avoids toxic ingredients, and keeps your style cute and convenient all season.

Need a summer hair strategy tailored just for you? Book a consultation at Rx Salon and let’s make this your healthiest hair summer yet.
